But one begins to curiosity about Montague's character when ravage hints at why Kittredge asked Montague for a divorce; it impinge onms that Montague led their 16-year-old son to a tall falling off and . . . Montague survived but the son did not (13-15). Kittredge's second husband, desolate, does not step forward to be perfect either. After all, evoke has a schoolmistress named Chloe (16).

Then, when Montague's purported body (with most of its head blown off) suddenly washes up on shore, Harry starts wondering if Montague is really utterly (39-62). By the time Harry hears that Chloe's apartment has been ransacked, Harry starts to worry that someone has been watching the two of them (46-47). Meanwhile, Harry's wife seems to have an ability to peach to the dead and is supposedly carrying on conversations with Harlot's ghost; hence, perhaps, the title. Then Harry's superstar from "the Farm" (Harry's word for their CIA training camp in Virginia) beating-reed instrument Rosen shows up to help unravel the mystery of Montague's death (56-183). Suddenly, Harry leaves the Keep after Kittredge warns him of imminent danger, specifically, that Dix Butler is coming to see her (and that she is in love with Butler) (83).

Butler was first suspected by Reed Rosen in connection with Montague's death (72). Unfortunately, Harry does not warn Rosen of Butler's arrival, and, when the Keep is burned that night, Rosen dies (85). Mailer later reveals that Butler is in addition a CIA man, which further confirms Kitt

So the opening scenes set a suspenseful tone--is enormous Montague alive or dead? And if Montague is dead, who killed him? Kittredge does not seem too true here. She cared enough about Harry to save his life, but she leaves him the modal value she did Montague: after it is too late to change her decision. And if Montague is not dead (as we later find Harry assumes), then why is Kittredge feigning that she can talk to his ghost--has she conspired with someone to make it look uniform he has died? And so Harry has revealed himself to be just give care Kittredge: disloyal. While Harry cheated on his wife, his wife in circle left him-as well as Montague--without warning. But Montague's consignment also seems questionable.

Montague seems equally untrustworthy since, from the time Harry became assiduous by the CIA, he and Kittredge pumped Harry for whatever cultivation they could get out of him concerning his secret activities in Germany, Uruguay, and, finally, his involvement with events environ the Bay of Pigs.

Mailer leaves us with Harvey Hubbard, alive and well in Moscow. Harry is looking for Harlot, the man who deceived him all these years. Harry thinks that Montague is now, still, working for the KGB. It is ill-defined whether Kittredge left her second husband Harry for Dix Butler because Harry could not see that Harlot was working as a spy for the Russians. Similarly, Mailer's book raises the question of whether the CIA masterminded the deaths of the Kennedys. Mailer ends with the words "To Be Continued." possibly Mailer intends to write another novel in which he explains what happened to Kittredge Montague-Hubbard and Butler. And possibly Mailer intends--in his next novel--to tell us if Harry ever finds Huge Montague, otherwise known as Harlot, in Moscow. Perhaps Mailer intends to drip another six years writing an even more in-depth examination of the CIA's role in foreign policy and the policy-making events that affect America.
