As a new shepherd Santiago learns how to keep his sheep out of danger and how to keep them happy. One night after base on balls his sheep to a rundown church for protection he has a dream or a vision. In that vision Santiago causes himself at the Egyptian pyramids nigh to find a cling to but right before he is told the exact mending he wakes up. Wanting to find out more well-nigh his dream he goes to a gypsy. All he gets from her is that if he finds the treasure it will make him a very thick man and that he must give her one-tenth of the treasure.
by and by talking with the gypsy Santiago decides that he will go after is treasure. With the money his sheep sold for Santiago travels to Egypt where on arriving he is robbed for all his money by a man who was a supposed guide and is left in the middle of a humiliated market village with no money and nowhere to stay or to go.
Looking for a place where he can work to earn enough money to take back home, he finds a little glass let on and starts to work. After working for a while he in conclusion has enough money to go back home. Before going Santiago talks to the glass shop owner, an older man, about his reason why he was going to the pyramids. After his enormous talk with the old shop owner, Santiago no eternal feels that just because of him getting robbed he wasnt going to find his treasure. Now Santiago has left the shop and gone after his dream.
