Ishmael develops from a shy boy who couldnt stand up for himself, but that changed when he met James Scobie. James started at St Daniels Boys College and Ishmaels whole perspective of life was turned upside down. At first he may of thought that Scobie was a living, breathing, rushing me sign. Scobie helped Ishmael get his self-reliance and self-acceptance back by compelling him to speak at the debate in their seminarys debating club. James had a lot to do with Ismael getting his arrogance back, he knew it would be a daunting thing for Ishmael to get up and speak in front of an audience. He did it to let Ishmael get over his uncertainties and be confident. As James quoted in the novel, one can only clutch so much fear.
Ishmael has been able to make more friends that get a stronger bond throughout the novel. During Ishmaels time in the debating team, Ishmael gained confidence in himself, he also made some friends on the way that he wouldnt have been able to have without his self-assurance. Its important to make the right choice of friends, and thats what Ishmael did. He found out that Orazio gets bullied too, but razza uses humour to postpone Barrys comments. Scobie also copped a lot of mean comments by Barry, but Scobie was confident and stood up for himself ………….
