LOCATION:
On the nineteenth of February, 1942, mainland Australia was attacked by Nipponese forces, which mount two air raids on Darwin.
REASONS:
Darwin was a key antisubmarine position against Japan. It was also seen as a key porthole key for its allies; Indonesia and East Timor. At the time Australia had weighd the Japaneses plan was to wipe out Australia. Experts today believe that the actual plan was to destroy all of Australias allied air and sea forces. This would help them to gain control of separate rich countries so that they could use their resources and establish stronger defences against any more than counter attacks.
MAIN EVENTS:
The Bombing of Darwin was the largest Japanese attack since drop-off Harbour, which was planned and led by the same commander. The Japanese attacked at 9:58 am, where 188 planes were launched from Japanese land bases and four aircraft carriers from the Timor Sea. jumbo run outers attacked the ships in the harbour, the military and civilian airstrips and the hospital. Dive bombers were escorted by sub planes to protect them from Australian and allied planes. The first attack lasted 40 minutes. The second attack commenced an hour later. Heavy bombers attacked the Royal Australian Air Force Base, and lasted 25 minutes.



The Japanese continued to bomb Darwin 64 times until they ceased on the 12th of November 1943.
RESULTS:
On the 19th of December 1941, an official order was issued; to evacuate women and children from Darwin. They were allowed little baggage and the ships they travelled on were hot, overcrowded and short on food and pissing supplies.
The two raids killed 243 people and wounded al intimately 400 Australian and allied citizens. Twenty military aircraft were destroyed, eight ships were sunk and most civil and military forces were destroyed.
