I am very critical when I hear battalion reference their idea of a adept movie. Many generation the reasons they give fall short of even being comprehensible. Reasons including: the actors/actresses, the music, the grade, and the peculiar(a) effect. Granted, these are all important pieces to making a good movie, but I believe the success or hardship of an endeavor depends on the writer.
Having a famous actor/actress doesnt guarantee the movie will be good. Having special effects is simply eye-candy and doesnt guarantee anything other than a freehanded amount of money was spent in the movies production. Without a good script, a movie with a 99% chance of being amazing can easily wrench that last percent and fail miserably.
Many older movies did not have the budget for shock-and-awe cinematography so it relied on the director and the producer to use their mental imagery to build suspense and intrigue. Movies utilize to be an active experience where you allowed yourself to get scared. Your imagination would light upon hold and allow you to cross the threshold of reality. These days, it seems as though most movies just automatically do it for you.
Little imagination is needed to enjoy the movie and almost all of the guess-work is gone. That is why I was pleasantly surprised with Shutter Island.
